Diploma overview
While Egypt is rich in museums, heritage institutions, and existing archeology undergraduate/graduate programs, there is a lack of visibility in the heritage science sector in Egypt and the Arab World, which is a critical problem. There is a need to shift from traditional archaeology programs to heritage studies in order to open new market spaces for graduates. The approach of ‘Heritage Science’ is a unique program that redefines the field. Therefore, these programs will train students to understand this unique discipline on one hand and develop practical skills in chosen areas on the other. The Heritage Science programs are the first and only program in the region particularly relating to the use of science and technology in the preservation and management of cultural heritage. As a result, E-JUST Heritage Science students could lead the field in Egypt and Arab nations. Furthermore, there is an existing Egypt-Japan collaboration in the preservation and management of Egyptian heritage with identified strengths in this area among Japanese universities, which support E-JUST.
E-JUST Heritage Science program could provide direct and indirect technical and conceptual support for Egyptian museums (through E-JUST experts, equipment, and students’ graduation projects and fieldwork). The Heritage Science program will show how education should feed into practice and policy, as all museums/heritage institutions in Egypt are facing practical issues to safely manage, study, conserve and display collections. Graduates of the Heritage Science programs will be well prepared to work, not only in Egypt but in the gap in the job market in the Arab nations and Africa.
The degree aims at setting the foundation for heritage science principles and theory and areas of specialization, with an extended practical element focusing on conservation science and museum management. The degree consists of a minimum of 24 credits of course work including Zemi Seminars. The student, with the approval of his/her academic advisor, should select credits of seminars (lectures) practicum and take the compulsory Fieldwork and Zemi Seminars in specialization in which he/she would be interested Conservation Science or Museum Management. The area of specialization should be defined during the application process.
